Santiago Machado is a seasoned leader in sustainability with extensive experience directing impactful environmental projects. He holds a degree in Natural Resources and Agricultural Engineering from the Universidad de Guadalajara and a Master’s in Environmental Law and Public Policy from the Universidad del Medio Ambiente. He has also completed advanced studies in Sustainable Development at El Colegio de México and LEAD International, complemented by certifications in governance, natural resource management, territorial development, systems analysis, and regenerative design.

For over a decade, Santiago has collaborated with prominent organizations in Mexico and worldwide. He has worked with groups such as the Mexican Civil Council for Sustainable Forestry and Natural Spaces and Sustainable Development, as well as international organizations like Rainforest Alliance. His partnerships extend to government entities, including Mexico’s National Forestry Commission, the National Commission for Biodiversity Knowledge and Use, and the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas. Additionally, he has served as a consultant for global organizations like The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, and international agencies such as the French Development Agency and USAID.

Santiago’s expertise centers on designing and leading projects in integrated land management, landscape stewardship, and the preservation of natural heritage, with a focus on ecosystem services, environmental economics, and public policy. From 2012 to 2014, he led the regional coordination of the “Local Governance for REDD+” project, promoting intermunicipal partnerships as drivers of territorial development in Mexico. Between 2014 and 2020, he directed the “Paisajes Bioculturales” project, which established Mexico’s first Biocultural Landscape—a management model inspired by France’s Regional Natural Parks—and secured its recognition as a public policy in Mexican legislation.

Santiago is the founder of RegenerActivo, a consultancy agency that provides strategic guidance to organizations, agencies, and institutions in designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating projects, with an emphasis on organizational innovation and nature-based solutions.

Currently, Santiago serves as the Country Director of Rainforest Alliance in Mexico, where he leads initiatives to create a more sustainable world by harnessing social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities.
