Innovative solutions for water management in Mexican agriculture

Manuel Bravo, President of Bayer Mexico, emphasised the need for collective action:
"Transforming water use and management requires united efforts from governments, academia, international organisations, and farmers."
Mexico faces a severe water crisis, with per capita water availability dropping from 10,000 m³ in 1960 to 3,200 m³ in 2020. Agriculture consumes 76% of the nation’s water, yet inefficient practices lead to significant waste. Modern solutions, such as drip irrigation, could reduce usage by up to 60%, but only 6.5 million hectares out of 21 million are irrigated.
Bayer Mexico has saved over 85 million m³ of water through initiatives like CARLOTA, which uses data-driven insights to reduce farmer's water use by 20%. The "Cultivating Every Drop" project has conserved 78 million m³ while training 80,000 farmers in efficient irrigation.
